The App Store is an iOS service created and designed by Apple. It allows users to browse and download applications, which are developed by using the iPhone SDK and published through Apple after successful review.

Apple offers 70% of the money from the Apps go to the owner, whilst Apple retains 30%.

The App Store first opened on 11 July 2008 and required a software update (2.0) which was free to iPhone users but cost $9.95 for iPod touch users.

The App Store can also be accessed through iTunes 7.7(?) or newer.

Installed applications are located in ~/Containers (since iOS 8, previously ~/Applications)

IPA File Format

An .IPA file is a ZIP file with the following contents:

• ./Payload/
• ./Payload/{AppName}.app/
• ./Payload/{AppName}.app/{AppContents}
• ./iTunesArtwork
• ./iTunesMetadata.plist

An IPA file is actually the backup for an iOS application of your device as iTunes writes it. The App Store app is what you use to download 3rd-party apps.
