This folder is specified by the FHS as a place for the "shared library images needed to boot the system and run the commands in the root filesystem (i.e. by binaries in /bin and /sbin)." Interestingly, despite there being binaries in /bin and /sbin, this folder is empty; quite possibly because iOS uses /private/var/lib and /System/Library instead.
