The lock screen shall prevent unauthorized access to the device.
It is however vulnerable depending on iOS version:

- 6.1 vulnerability detailed on www.theverge.com
In general the lock screen can be circumvented with any device where a jailbreak is available as shown on www.iphoneblogr.com.
