This folder is used by APT (apt
) for storing the .deb files of packages. Oddly enough, APT is in itself, distributed as a .deb file (just like every other package on *nix-like systems). This creates a circular dependency. The only way to get around this is to have APT installed on OS install as flat files in the install system. However, Apple doesn't provide the APT binaries (apt-get
, etc.), and neither does Cydia.
Cydia provides a package for APT, but with the circular dependency, saurik opted for a different solution. Cydia is not a wrapper around APT, but is in fact an APT replacement. saurik claims that Cydia is more robust that APT, however, this has not been tested.
