Summary
An untethered jailbreak is a jailbreak where your device does not require you to reboot with a connection to an external device capable of executing commands on the device.
Device
Currently, all iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models have an untethered jailbreak. Even Linux is now able to run untethered.
iOS
Currently, the iOS 4 can only have an untethered jailbreak on all devices except for the newer bootrom iPhone 3G[S]'s, the third generation iPod Touch's, and the iPad.
Operating System
As of right now, there is not way to jailbreak the iOS 4 untethered on Linux-based operating systems. This can be done, however, with Mac OS X and Windows.
