This is present in the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the iPad Wifi + 3G. A 'magnetometer' (the formal term for a digital compass) is a scientific instrument used to measure the strength and/or direction of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the instrument. The compass found in the iPhone 3GS is the AKM Semiconductor AKM8973, whereas the iPhone 4 and iPad use the AKM Semiconductor AKM8975.
