The hosts file (normally found at /etc/hosts on *nix systems) is responsible for locally overwriting DNS resolution. This can be useful when you're trying to e.g. block specific hosts (ad-delivery servers) or for development and experimentation (Siri proxys, etc.). It's also used to define the localhost DNS name for the local device.
